Duravit Introduces – The Bathroom of the Future with Viu & XViu

The bathroom of the future. Created by sieger design for Duravit, the Viu and XViu series is a completely new concept in bathroom design.    It combines the durability of ceramics with the elegance and precision of aluminium.

The dynamic V-shape profile of the supporting console is a key feature, which can be seen on free-standing  vanity units and the bathtub surround. The design creates an almost optical illusion. It is strong and definite from one angle, yet move a little and they appear to have transformed into fine lines that all but disappear.

Textures and Surfaces

This illusion is further enhanced by the choice of textures and surfaces available.  Only the finest ceramics, glass and metal, combined with matt lacquers or high-quality woods have been used. All combine to create this new range which encompasses the entire bathroom.

The Highlight – Washing Area

The highlight is a washing area that incorporates Duravit’s patented c-bonded technology.  The supporting metal console with its dynamic V-shape profile is available in Champagne Matt or avant garde Black Matt; its exterior forms a strict rectangle, whilst the interior curves organically to create a spacious basin that is surrounded by a generous shelf area.  The underside of the basin is elegantly covered by acrylic panelling.  A discreet design feature this conceals  the fixing structure, cables and connecting hoses. It ensuring that the elaborate technology for the D.1e electronic tap, does not impact the design.

Freestanding Bathtubs

Another key element of the series is the free-standing bathtub.  The prominent metal frame with the signature V-shaped profile in Champagne Matt or Black Matt provides a distinctive contrast to the high-gloss white acrylic and creates an eye-catching centrepiece.

The XViu bathroom programme can be adapted to suit an individual style;  available in 34 finishes it combines well with a number of Duravit’s other ceramic series.

Masterpiece 2018 a success for Edward Barnsley Workshop

The Edward Barnsley Workshop at Masterpiece 2018

The Edward Barnsley Workshop is now a regular exhibitor at London’s Masterpiece and once again participated in this prestigious annual event at The Royal Hospital Chelsea which ran from 28th June – 4th July.

Masterpiece 2018, was launched in 2010 with a unique focus on cross-collecting. Over the past eight years, it  established itself as the leading international event for viewing and buying the finest works of art, from antiquity to the present day in the heart of London.

The Edward Barnsley Workshop, makers of bespoke furniture, have attended the Masterpiece exhibition since the beginning. This year they chose to display the “Repose Mk.III Rocking Chair”,  for the first time at Masterpiece.  Made of Hampshire oak  all of the chairs components, including the gouged finish, are worked by hand. The natural appearance of the oak has been subtly darkened by fuming and the leather-upholstered seat has contrasting stitching. The rocking chair has an ethereal quality as it appears to be organically moulded from a single piece of wood.

The “Repose Mk.II Rocking Chair” is one of a series of scrubbed, oak pieces, designed by James Ryan and made by Nathan Peach, with a finish that is chip-carved with a gouge; the sitter can touch and feel the tool marks left by the maker. The seat is hand woven with Danish cord.

Edward Barnsley’s Designer-Manager, James Ryan said: “With this chair. I have refined the curve and arrangement of the back bars to create a complex three-dimensional shape that makes it extremely comfortable. The sculptured silhouette and graceful curves of this rocking chair are easy on the eye and create a feeling of relaxation and repose.  As a designer, I love the feedback and interaction with the visitors coming to Masterpiece excited to see the exhibits.”

Duravit

Red Dot Award for Duravit C.1 tap series and Luv bathroom range

Both the Duravit C.1 tap series and Luv, the complete bathroom range have received the 2018 “Red Dot” award for outstanding design.

The C.1 design range by Kurt Merki Jr. perfectly reflects Duravit’s design language. The ergonomic handle with a recess underneath is comfortable to hold and permits precise operation.

The unusual design of Luv by Danish designer Cecilie Manz combines Nordic purism and timeless, emotional elegance. Gentle forms follow a stringent geometry. The selection of materials and colours is testament to her sense for touch and nuances.

The Red Dot award for “Product Design”, which can trace its origins back to 1955, seeks out each year’s best products. In 2018 designers and manufacturers from 59 nations entered more than 6,300 objects in the competition. True to the motto “in search of good design and innovation”, a jury – around 40 strong – evaluated the products individually as originals. The expert committee only awards the internationally renowned quality seal to products with an impressively high design quality and that satisfy stringent evaluation criteria.
